Answer: The most cost-effective solution is to open a current account in the Republic. Most Irish banks will allow people who live in Northern Ireland to open accounts in the Republic, providing that they attend a branch in person. It is then cheapest to transfer money from Northern Ireland to an account in the Republic by paying in a cheque. Payments can be made either by a euro cheque drawn on the Irish account, or by withdrawing cash from the account that is in the Republic.
