Driving licences no longer accepted as ID by Ryanair

By Lisa Smyth
Thursday, 24 September 2009

Anyone booked on a Ryanair flight departing from next Thursday will have to produce a passport or Government ID card before being allowed to fly.

From next month, passengers must be in possession of a valid passport or a Government-issued National Identity card, issued |solely for the purpose of identification, with a driver’s licence no longer accepted as valid ID.

The new regulations come in on the same day Ryanair moves to 100% web check-in which will allow passengers, including those travelling with checked baggage, to check in online to avoid queues and delays at check-in desks.

Ryanair’s web check-in service is open from 15 days to four hours before the scheduled departure time of each flight. Web check-in can be accessed via ryanair.com.

Having printed their boarding cards at home, passengers without check-in bags can continue to proceed through airport security, while those with check-in bags can present at one of Ryanair’s drop desks before proceeding through airport security to the boarding gate.

Ryanair are making it easier and easier for the general public to select alternative airlines. Their attitude to the general public is derisory, and this action of not accepting Driving Licenses, which incorporate a fraudulent resistant laser cut photographic image. (produced BY the government as previously pointed out!) is pathetic publicity seeking.

I've used my Driving License all over the world for ID purposes - its scandalous that Ryanair believe themselves above the standard the rest of the world work to.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that it was the government who issued driving licences?

Why does Ryanair refuse to accept a driver's licence as ID when driving licences are readily accepted around the world?

The only reason I can think of is to make it as difficult as possible to check in online, hence forcing you to pay additional fees at the airport

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
