Unless you are already an experienced skier and familiar with the resorts across Europe that are best suited to the specific needs of a family, booking that first group skiing trip can be quite a daunting prospect.

While organising a trip for adults affords great flexibility, when you have children in tow, you need to ensure that your chosen destination has everything your offspring will require. Not just in terms of slopes, but also in terms of the facilities on offer at the resort and the suitability of the wide range of family ski chalets available.

Listed below are several outstanding family ski holidays across Europe which each offer a wide array of holiday breaks and facilities for families.

1. Alpe d’Huez – Nicknamed ‘the island in the sun’, Alpe d’Huez, or ‘Alpy’ as it is fondly known is an outstanding family-friendly resort. Not only does the resort boast a series of gentle green and blue runs for the novice skier to find their feet, but also hosts a range of activity clubs for families, catering for children from as young as six months up to 12 years of age. Children have the advantage of being able to become part of a renowned ski school, enabling them to learn the fundamentals of good skiing in a relaxing environment. With highly competitive prices, a great mix of runs for all levels and plenty of après ski activities to keep the parents amused, Alpe d’Huez is a perfect starting point if you and your family want to ski France.

2. Kranjska Gora – If you are looking for real value for money combined with outstanding scenery and the facilities of a much pricier resort, Kranjska Gora in Slovenia is for you. This is a perfect resort for beginners offering gentle nursery slopes situated at the heart of the village. Intermediate and advanced skiers aren’t forgotten either, with some outstanding skiing available, including a course that once held a World Cup slalom event. With two clubs for children located at the Hotel Alpina, a wide variety of activities around town and outstanding value for money (including three-course meals starting from £12), you will struggle to find better skiing, at a comparable resort, for a lower price.

3. Tignes – If your family is slightly more experienced at skiing and is looking for another challenge, then Tignes is well worth considering. Not only is the skiing outstanding, with several easy runs and a wide range of intermediate and advanced runs that offer some of the most challenging and exciting skiing in Europe, the activities on offer and nightlife around town are also superb. There’s plenty to do around Tignes and with a variety of children’s clubs available on a daily basis, plus a nanny service available should the parents fancy a quiet night out alone, Tignes is the perfect base to put your skiing skills to the test.

4. Niederau – Another resort that is a great confidence builder for a new or relatively inexperienced skier, but which offers great value and outstanding family facilities, is Niederau in Germany. Its picturesque setting amidst the Kitzbuhler Alps not only has a range of clubs designed to keep children amused, but it is also home to some of the finest skiing instruction in Europe. There are several beginner runs in the area, moving onto intermediate and four excellent black runs as well as the chance to indulge in some off piste skiing for the more experienced. With plenty of other activities to keep the family amused and a beautiful setting, Niederau is a great value holiday for the skiing family looking for something a little different, at a great price.

So if you are considering taking to the piste with your family for your next holiday, then why not give any of these four magnificent family-friendly resorts some serious consideration

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.
