Assaults ‘tarnish’ Derry St Patrick’s celebration

Four men, including three Italian students, were recovering |yesterday after separate violent assaults in Londonderry on St Patrick's Day.
The three visitors were assaulted close to a shop on the Strand Road around 2am on Wednesday. The first culprit is described as being 5ft 6ins, of a heavy build with blond hair and a pierced tongue. He was wearing a blue pullover, jeans and white trainers. The second male was tall and of a thin build with dark hair. One of the students sustained a serious injury to his eye.
Police are also appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously assaulted in the Pump Street area around 1pm on Wednesday.
The victim was approached by a group of youths who asked where he was from. The man answered he was not from the area and was then punched in the face. He was treated in hospital for a broken jaw.
SDLP Derry City councillor Mark H Durkan has condemned those responsible for attacking the three foreign students.
“I condemn the individuals responsible for this attack which has tarnished what otherwise was a peaceful and successful St Patrick's Day.” he said.
