Half of voters want David Cameron to quit if UK leaves EU

By Gavin Cordon

Almost half of voters (48%) believe David Cameron should resign as Prime Minister if the country opts to leave the EU, according to a new opinion poll.

Pollsters Ipsos MORI found that opinions were divided along party lines, with 63% of Conservative supporters happy for Mr Cameron to carry on in Downing Street, against just 38% of Labour supporters and 22% of Ukip backers.

Gideon Skinner, head of political research at Ipsos MORI, said: "David Cameron is crucial to the Remain side campaign as the most important politician to how people will vote.

"But the flip side of this is that many Britons think his premiership should end if the country votes for Brexit."
