Big-hearted business people across Northern Ireland have raised thousands of pounds for research aimed at ending congenital heart disease in babies.

They are backing the Belfast Telegraph's Christmas campaign which is this year supporting Chest Heart & Stroke's Baby Hearts Appeal.

The initiative will fund the Baby Hearts Study – a groundbreaking research study in Belfast.

Ahead of our appeal, staff in big and small local businesses dug deep to organise events to support the Belfast-based study that could help save lives around the world.

From running the marathon to arranging coffee mornings, the donations have stacked up.

The research will be led by Professor Helen Dolk and her team, working in collaboration with Dr Frank Casey and Dr Brian Craig from the Clark Clinic in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

NIE was one of the first local businesses to come on board.

Its Staff and Pensioners' Fund donated £1,100 towards equipment for the study.

Marie Power, a member of NIE's charity committee, said: "After reading about the research study and how its findings could make such a massive impact on a global stage and put an end to babies being born with congenital heart disease, we simply had to donate."

Law firm Elliot Duffy Garrett also held a coffee morning which raised £260. The firm had already raised £1,261 through entering three relay teams in the Belfast Marathon in 2013.

And Tennent's NI recently held a 'big breakfast', raising £328.58. It had also raised a massive £18,292.64 through staff running marathons as well as collections at Tennent's Vital in the summer.

Ever since an employee at stockbrokers Cunningham Coates died from a heart attack in Christmas 2011, the firm has supported the Baby Hearts Appeal.

Until Christmas Eve the Tele is appealing for 800 new supporters to donate at least £25 each, to pay for 110 babies from across the province to take part in the study.

But no matter what the amount donated, it will help make a difference and will be welcomed.
