Bridging divides: The Alexandra Park Steering Group

Bridging divides: The Alexandra Park Steering Group

It’s a project that helped bridge a community divide. For residents living close to a north Belfast interface a peace wall running through Alexandra Park has been a dominant feature in their lives.

The park was divided in two by a peace wall in 1994 to stop sectarian rioting between the nationalist and loyalist communities.

But in 2009 the Alexandra Park Steering Group was set up to build cross community relations.

It was part of the Reconciling through Regeneration programme supported by PEACE III funds. It involved various community groups including Greater Newington Residents’ Association, North Belfast Community Development and Transition Group and Tigers Bay Concerned Residents.

A major step as part of the project was the opening of the Peace Gate in Alexandra Park.

Groundwork NI, which was involved in the project, described the move as “a symbol of the dedication and commitment” shown by the steering group.
