Decision to scrap car parking fees hailed

Retailers across Northern Ireland have praised the new Regional Development Minister’s decision to scrap controversial plans to introduce car parking charges.
Danny Kennedy promised that one of his main priorities when he assumed office would be to ditch the proposals earmarked for 30 towns and cities in total.
Indeed, the MLA for Newry and Armagh said he felt it would be “entirely sensible” to prevent the introduction of this toll system.
His decision — which has been applauded by the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIRTA) — comes just weeks after the Belfast Telegraph launched its Park The Charges campaign, calling for the scheme to be abandoned.
“We want to see a fair policy in car parking and public transport that helps but doesn’t hinder town centres or independent traders,” said NIRTA boss Glyn Roberts.
