Donegal crash: Tragic Paul laid to rest on his 20th birthday

Paul Doherty, one of the eight victims of the fatal car crash in Inishowen last Sunday night, was laid to rest yesterday on his 20th birthday.

And at his funeral Mass in St Mary's Church, Clonmany, yesterday morning, parish priest Fr Fintan Diggin spoke about how the young man's life might have unfolded.

“Who knows what he could've been, who knows what he would've developed into being, who knows what a future on this earth would've meant for him; the possibilities he had to get married and generate new life,” Fr Diggin said.

“We're contemplating these things, wondering what the future might've been and yet so burdened down with the grief of present days.”

A huge crowd gathered outside the church yesterday morning to meet the cortege which included the cab of an articulated lorry carrying wreaths.

Also the roof of the hearse bore flowers in the shape of a digger and a model truck festooned with rosebuds — testament to Paul Doherty's love of mechanics.

And several items belonging to Paul, who worked as a truck driver, had been placed on the foot of the altar, including a boilersuit, a spanner and a model lorry with his name printed on the side of it.
