Dragons Den star Duncan Bannatyne ‘considered suicide’

Published 16/03/2010

Dragons' Den star Duncan Bannatyne has revealed that he considered suicide after his first marriage broke down.

The Scottish millionaire said he struggled with depression and came close to ending his life after realising the marriage to his first wife Gail was finished.

Bannatyne, who has built up a £320 million fortune, said the trappings of success no longer brought him any joy during the mid-1990s. In an interview on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Bannatyne (61) said he was driven to despair and would regularly break down in tears on his way to work.

“I came very close to considering suicide. I knew life just wasn't right,” he said.

He added that his depression only lifted when he unburdened himself to his wife, the mother to four of his six children.
