Drunken 'City of Culture' celebrations lead to month in jail
An alcoholic who celebrated Londonderry’s successful City of Culture 2013 bid in a drunken and disorderly manner has been jailed for one month.
Patrick Farren (48), from Stoneburn Place in the Waterside area of the city, was among hundreds of people in Guildhall Square on the evening of July 15 when the result of the UK City of Culture bidding process was announced.
District Judge Barney McElholm was told that Farren, who had 147 previous criminal convictions, became loud and abusive after Derry was announced as the winner.
The city’s magistrates court was told that when approached by police officers, Farren was verbally abusive towards them and refused to quieten down.
