Belfast actor Gerard McCarthy today threw his weight behind a campaign to stamp out homophobic bullying in schools.

Gerard who plays controversial bisexual Kris Fisher in teen soap Hollyoaks, urged people to sign up to an Equality Walk taking place in Barcelona between July 11 and 13.

The walk is in support of Stonewall's Education For All programme, tackling homophobic bullying in Britain's schools.

Stonewall's School Report found 65% of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils in schools have experienced homophobic bullying. And 97% hear insulting homophobic remarks at school, such as 'poof', 'dyke' and 'queer'.

Gerard said: "I wore the tee-shirt in Hollyoaks to help highlight the campaign and to help try and expel homophobic bullying from schools. So many young people have experienced homophobic bullying while at school and it really has to stop."
