First female provost for university

By Donna Deeney

Published 08/06/2011

The University of Ulster has made history by appointing Professor Deirdre Heenan as the first female provost at its Magee Campus.

Prof Heenan succeeds Prof Jim Allen, provost from 2006 until his retirement in May, but she has played a central role in plans to expand the university in Derry for a number of years.

This is the latest accolade in an already distinguished career for Prof Heenan who is also a social policy expert, media commentator and board member of Ilex Regeneration.

Prof Heenan said: "I am privileged to be appointed to this position at such a pivotal stage in the development of higher education in the north west. The university and people of this city want Magee to grow."
