GCSE results: Now we're ready for next step in life

We asked students across Northern Ireland how they fared and what their plans are.

Bethany Petrie (16)

Ballyclare High School, achieved 11 A*s

"I can't believe that I got all A*s but as I hope to do medicine at university, I really needed to have good grades."

Samuel McCanna (16)

Dundonald High School, achieved 1 A*, 1 A, 2 Bs, 3 Cs and 1 D

I think I did all right but I was a bit disappointed in some of my subjects. My dad is over the moon, though, and kept telling me how proud of me he was."

Sophie Henderson (16)

Lisneal College, Londonderry, achieved 1 B and 5 Cs

"I passed everything except French but I can come back to school and hopefully do Science and Health and Social Care for A-level."

Claudia Airey (16)

Hazelwood Integrated College, Belfast, achieved 1 A and 8 Bs

"It's great to know I did so well and I will be staying on to do A-levels as I would like to work in medicine or perhaps be a midwife."

Rionach Devine (17)

Lumen Christi College, Londonderry, achieved 7 A*s and 3 As

"I am really pleased with these results. There was a good bit of work involved but I knew I had done reasonably well, so it's great to get these results."

Olivia Fleming (16)

Ballyclare High School, achieved 10 A*s and 1 A

"I'm really delighted with my results, especially after my brother Aaron got 5 A*s in his A-levels last week so our parents are very pleased with how we did."

Broagan Anderson (16)

St Mary's College, Londonderry, achieved 1 A*, 2 As, 5 Bs and a C

"There was a lot of pressure but I passed everything and I am so pleased but now it will be back to school and hopefully A-levels."

Emily Howard (16)

Wallace High School, Lisburn, achieved 10 A*s and 1 A

"I'm ecstatic. I can't believe it. I thought I'd done OK in the exams but I didn't expect that many A*s. I hope to do Dentistry in the future."

Ben Dempster (16)

Dundonald High School, achieved 1 B and 6 Cs

"I'm relieved that I pulled it off. Now I'm going to study Sports Science and Exercise Planning at Belfast Met."

Jake McVicker (17)

Ballyclare High School, achieved 8 A*s, 1 A and 1 B

"I'm a scrum half for the school's rugby team and just back from a tour of New Zealand. I learned how to time-manage and forego a training session for revision"

Taylor Lindsay (16)

Hazelwood Integrated College, Belfast, achieved 1 A*, 1 A, 2 Bs and 5 Cs

"I'm absolutely ecstatic, I can't stop smiling and it's a great relief to know that I did so well."

Nathan Lindsay (17)

Wallace High School, Lisburn, achieved 11 A*s

"I'm extremely happy but I'm glad it's over. There were a few exams that were a lot harder and I didn't think I'd done as well in them. In the future, I want to do engineering."

It's crazy. I never expected to do this well. My mum was so excited, she was shaking. She was more nervous than I was myself."

"I'm so relieved to have finally got my results and I'm happy. I really want to go and do my A-levels at Ashfield School."

Patrick Dougan (17)

"I did better than I hoped and now I'm working on four A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Biology as I want to do medicine."

Emma Coalter (16)

I didn't think I had done very well. I want to study Dentistry in the future."

Christian Montgomery (16)

Ballyclare High School, achieved 9 A*s and 2 As

"It's great knowing that I've done so well. Now I plan to do all the sciences along with Maths as I aim to do Medicine at university."

Andrew Coalter (16)

The Wallace High School, Lisburn, achieved 10 A*s and 1 A

"I'm pretty happy. It was as good as I could have really expected. I found a couple of the exams quite hard and I wasn't sure if I had got an A* in them but I did it."

David McKeown (16)

Dundonald High School, achieved 2 Bs and 4 Cs

"I wasn't too nervous because I didn't doubt myself to get five passes but I got six so it's great.

My big dream is to be a professional football coach."

Amy Cassidy (16)

Lisneal College, Londonderry, achieved 1 A, 3 Bs and 6 Cs

"There was a lot of pressure to get the marks and I am happy to get the results."

Caitlin Quigg (16)

St Mary's College, Londonderry, achieved 4 Cs and 1 B

"I'm really pleased at my results and I will be staying on at school to do music, ICT and Health and Social Care for A-level."

Sophie McIvor (16)

Lisneal College, Londonderry, achieved 3 As, 4 Bs and 2 Cs

"I'm so glad that I can come back to do my A-levels as I would hate to leave this school."

Erin McPhilemy (16)

St Mary's College, Londonderry, achieved 2 A*s, 3 As, a B and 2 Cs

I'm happy with those results and glad that it is all over now."

Nina Bingham (16)

Hazelwood Integrated College, Belfast, achieved 1 A*, 3 Bs and 6 Cs

"I'm delighted with my results and want to do A-levels in Photography, Public Services, and Health and Social Care as I want a career with children".

Marty Johnston (16)

Belfast Boys Model School, achieved 2 A*s, 3 Bs and 3 Cs

"Studying was tough going but it's all worth it now and the extra work and classes have paid off and I'm staying on for A-levels."

Katie Sweeney (16)

Lumen Christi College, Londonderry, achieved 6 A*s and 5 As

"It was a bit of work but I'm glad I got the results I did and now it will be A-levels and hopefully on to university."

Niamh McGinnity (16)

Lumen Christi College, Londonderry, achieved 3 A*s, and 8 As

"I feel great now that I have got the results and while there was hard work, it has been worth it."

"All the work paid off and now I want to work towards a sports science degree as I want to be a fitness instructor for my career."

Gemma Mullan (17)

"I'm very happy and pleased with these results and am looking forward to doing my A-levels. I would hope to do Medicine or Dentistry at university."

Emily Cairns (16)

Wallace High School, Lisburn, achieved 11 A*s

"I feel so relieved. There were some exams I came out of thinking I had got a U so it was a nice surprise."

Jordan Davis (16)

Belfast Boys Model School, achieved 2 A*s, 3 As, 2 Bs and 3 Cs

"I'm pretty pleased and actually did better than I had hoped for. Now I would like to go to study in various subjects including ICT and Travel, Tourism and Business."

William Rose (16)

Belfast Boys Model School, achieved 2 A*s, 3 Bs and 3 Cs

"I'm very happy with my results and now aim to stay on to do politics with another subject at A-level. Then after that I plan to head to FE college or university".

Sophie Patterson (17)

Ballyclare High School, achieved 7 A*s and 4 As

"I'm so chuffed with my results. I will do Maths, English, History and Theatre Studies for A-level as I got A*s in those."

Gary Dillon (16) The Wallace High School, Lisburn achieved 4 A*s, 5 As and a B 

“I can’t believe it, I wasn’t expecting it. I want to do Biology, Geography, Politics and P.E. at Wallace.”

Curtis Patrick (16) Belfast Boys Model School achieved 4 As, 4 Bs and 1 C

“I did well as I wanted to and now hope to study drama at uni as I’m acting soon in the school’s production of The Little Shop of Horrors”.

Ben Parker (16) The Wallace High School, Lisburn achieved 5A*s, 4 As and 2 Bs

“I felt I got what I deserved so I’m happy with it. There are a couple that I would have liked to have had a better mark in but I am pleased overall.”

Jordan Burgess (16) Dundonald High School achieved 2 Cs, 1 D and an E

“I’m pleased but not with all of them. I was expecting worse than that so I’m happy enough. I’m going to South Eastern Regional College in Newtownards to do Carpentry and Joinery.”


Tia Golden (17) St Mary’s College, Londonderry achieved 8 Cs

“I passed everything I wanted to pass and so now it’s back to school for A Levels and we will see after that.”

Ross Thompson (16) Lisneal College, Londonderry, 1 A, and B in science and 2 Cs

“I will go to the North West Regional College now and hopefully will get to study engineering.”

Marc Smallwoods (16) Lisneal College, Londonderry passed Maths and Business Studies and achieved 6 Btecs

“It is too early to say what I’m going to do now. I will have to sit down and look at these results then I will make my mind up.”

Erin Porter (16) Dundonald High School achieved 3 Bs, 1 C and 1 D

“I thought I wouldn’t come out with any GCSEs so it’s great. My family are happy and proud. I’m going to Belfast Met to do Childcare”.
