Twenty schools across Northern Ireland have been selected to participate in a Schools Awareness Month programme hosted by the Confederation of Golf in Ireland during the month of May.

The initiative is taking place to tie in with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in Royal County Down Golf Club from 28 – 31 May to give students the opportunity to try golf for the first time.

Each school taking part will engage in a variety of interactive golfing activities which will introduce students to the game. They will learn how exactly the game works, the best way to hold a club, gain an understanding of all the technical terms involved and take part in a variety of fun challenges. All events will be run by the Confederation of Golf in Ireland which is the body responsible for supporting, promoting and developing the game of golf on the island of Ireland,

John Roche, Director of Golf and Business Development with the Confederation of Golf in Ireland, says he expects this year’s programme to be just as successful in Northern Ireland: “Our ‘Schools Awareness Month’ is a great opportunity to introduce younger players to the game and give them a chance to try golf for the first time. This initiative is a really great opportunity to demonstrate just how much fun golf is and that anyone can play.”

Last year, over 1,500 school students in Cork benefited from the programme when the Irish Open took place in Fota.

More than 80,000 spectators are expected to attend this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in Royal County Down hosted by the Rory Foundation and supported by Tourism Northern Ireland. Advance tickets are currently available at a cost of £30 or £35 per day with season tickets (for all four days) available for £75.
