Northern Ireland leads way on university applications
Northern Ireland has enjoyed the highest application rate to universities across the UK this year, statistics show.
Around 48% of youngsters had applied to a university course by the main January 15 deadline, followed by England (37%) and Wales (32%).
Scottish colleges are not included in the Ucas data.
On average this year, 55% of 18-year-olds in the top 10% of parliamentary constituencies in terms of university applications, applied for a degree course.
Just 24% of youngsters living in the bottom 10% of constituencies applied by the January deadline.
West Tyrone, where more than half of teenagers (52.4%) applied, had the highest rate in Northern Ireland.
East Londonderry (52.4%), East Antrim (52.4%) and South Belfast (52.3%) were also among the list of the top 10% of constituencies for university application rates in 2017, according to the data.
