Pupils from the Fleming Fulton School in Belfast are today launching their Pennies From Heaven fundraising project to help the annual Christmas collection for the Black Santa at St Anne's Cathedral.
The project began several years ago when one of the teachers, Brendagh D'Arcy, was given some sterling copper coins by the children of friends during a visit to Mullingar.
Each year there was an increase and in 2006 the school donated the remarkable sum of £3,500 to the Black Santa appeal.
This became known literally as Pennies From Heaven.
The Dean of Belfast, Dr Houston McKelvey, who acts as the Black Santa, said: "The spirit of our sit-out is best summed up for me in the fantastic yearly collection made by Fleming Fulton School."
