An elderly woman has been assaulted and left badly bruised and shocked in an attempted carjacking.

Shortly before 4.30pm yesterday a man approached the woman in Cavendish Square just off the Falls Road in west Belfast and tried to take her car keys.

In a struggle the woman was assaulted but she resisted and her attacker fled empty-handed.

A short time later, an attempt was made to hijack a van on the nearby Falls Road.

After a struggle with the male driver of the van, a man fled the scene and was struck by a passing white-coloured car as he tried to get away.

A 24-year-old man was arrested a short time later and is in custody for questioning.

Investigating officer Constable Kieran Murray said: “The elderly woman was badly bruised and both she and the male driver of the van were left badly shaken.”
