Kids take climate change law into their own hands
Friday, 9 November 2007
Pupils at 22 schools across Northern Ireland are drawing up their own climate change law - as MPs prepare to debate the Government's Climate Change Bill.
The young green activists are joining more than 1,800 schools and youth groups across the UK to come up with bright ideas to cut the country's carbon footprint as part of Friends of the Earth's 'Shout about climate solutions' activity week.
They will explore how laws are made in a fun and engaging way, drafting their own alternative climate change law.
Pupils at St Catherine's College in Armagh who have signed up for the activity packs will be learning about wind energy and are planning to plant trees with the help of the Ulster Wildlife Trust.
Meanwhile, students at Enniskillen Collegiate Grammar School will calculate their carbon footprint using a website, before drawing up a class charter of achievable steps they will all take to combat climate change. They will also team up with Action Renewables to explore green energy options for Northern Ireland.
The activity packs feature lesson plans designed to bring climate change issues to life within the classroom and are linked to the National Curriculum in the areas of science, maths, English, geography and citizenship.
Vicki Felgate, Friends of the Earth's youth and education co-ordinator, said: "This year 'Shout about' is providing a unique opportunity for teachers and young people to explore the hottest issue facing the world.
"The activity pack looks at the causes of climate change and the solutions, right through from individual solutions to the role of Government and the climate law.
"It's a great way for kids to learn about the democratic process and one of the most important issues facing their generation."
The Government's forthcoming Climate Change Bill will commit the UK to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent by 2050. MPs will debate the Bill during November and December.
