Air pollution in Belfast and Newry
Thursday, 6 December 2007
High levels of air pollution have been detected in Belfast and Newry, according to the latest Air Quality Report.
Excessive levels of particulates and nitrogen dioxide were reported at two of 41 automated monitoring sites which feed into the annual report.
The DoE said both cities' councils are now implementing action plans to improve air quality in those areas. Environment Minister Arlene Foster welcomed the news that air quality has improved over the last few decades.
The 2006 report, drawn up by the DoE in partnership with District Councils, provides details of air quality monitoring, summary of results, long-term trends and information on progress being made by councils in implementing local air quality management.
Mrs Foster said: "The link between clean air and good health is well known. By reducing air pollution, we can reduce illness and premature death. Clean air is essential to our health and well-being. I am therefore pleased to report that the quality of our air in Northern Ireland has improved."
Results from all the air quality monitoring sites can be obtained from www.airqualityni.co.uk.
