Biofuels ‘have pushed world food prices up 75%’
Friday, 4 July 2008
A World Bank assessment has reportedly concluded that the growing of crops for biofuels has forced up world food prices by 75%.
The Guardian newspaper says the confidential assessment flies in the face of US Government claims that biofuels have only contributed 3% to the rising cost of basic foodstuffs across the world.
Campaigners have been stating for some time that the massive upsurge in the use of agriculture land for controversial biofuels was the primary cause of the world food crisis.
The World Bank has reportedly estimated that rising food prices have pushed 100 million people below the poverty line.
They have also led to riots in several countries across the world.
