Birds left peckish by recession

Friday, 23 December 2011

Wild garden birds are being hit by the recession just as much as the rest of us.

A survey shows 87% of people rarely or never feed birds during winter, and as the paths get icier, this percentage could increase.

The coldest months of the year are the most difficult for garden birds. They rely heavily on additional food and nutrition left out for them to get through the freezing days.

And as Christmas approaches, animal lovers are being asked to remember the garden dwellers.

But Claire Thomas, wildlife advisor at birds charity, RSPB, warned people "to be careful that they are not feeding wild birds the wrong food".

Food that can harm birds includes porridge and bread. Grated cheese, fruit and seeds and suet are all healthier alternatives.
