Is Toome bypass on the road to victory?
Friday, 25 September 2009
Forget your luxury spas, world renowned concert venues and landmark shopping centres — it’s the Toome bypass that really drives the public’s admiration.
As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Construction Excellence Awards, the Belfast Telegraph is partnering with the Construction Employers Federation (CEF) to find the public’s favourite construction project in Northern Ireland from the past decade.
Readers have been voting via the Belfast Telegraph’s interactive online poll and despite tough competition from a range of high-profile developments, it’s the road bypassing Toome that has so far really impressed.
The bypass, which has dramatically cut travelling time between Belfast and Londonderry, has so far gained 35% of the vote, closely followed by the landmark shopping complex Victoria Square which has 20%.
The newly opened Lough Erne Resort and Spa is also proving popular with 18% of the vote.

John Armstrong, managing director of the CEF, said: “What the shortlist for the building of the decade really demonstrates is the widespread and positive impact the construction industry has had in Northern Ireland. It is no exaggeration to say it has brought benefits to practically every single person living in Northern Ireland.
“Looking at the shortlisted finalists it is heartening to see that the drive to exceed expectations has continued in 2009.”
The results of the public vote will be announced on October 8 at the CEF's Construction Excellence Awards gala evening.

Statistic - Toome By-Pass opened for 5yrs has saved circa 6.5 million hours of car emissions, fossil fuels, journey time & potential accidents in Northern Ireland, put plainly just under 300 years of our time saved so far! This vote is not an architecture awards, but is based on solid long term visionary construction affecting the lives of our people. The 18000 indigenous trees planted along this beautiful driving corridor during construction are slowly maturing & will come of age over the next 20 years. This project is no short term flash in the pan but a slow blooming rose in the countryside if Northern Ireland. The bridge also looks absolutely stunning architecturally day & night.
