Northern Ireland Water fined £500 for polluting river

Northern Ireland Water has admitted polluting a Co Down river after the sewage system was blocked.

The company was fined £500 after pleading guilty at Downpatrick Magistrates Court to causing the February 20, 2008, discharge.

A spokeswoman for NIW blamed inappropriate items being flushed into the system.

“Many people genuinely don't realise the potential damage they are doing, not only to their own internal pipes, but also to the sewerage system by flushing baby wipes, sanitary items and cotton buds,” she said.

“Unfortunately, in this case, inappropriate flushing has resulted in the sewer overflowing and causing this pollution incident and damage to the environment.”
