Shark pup beached on Ards Peninsula after attack by bull seal
A newborn basking shark pup has washed up on the shores of the Ards Peninsula.
It's thought a number of young sharks may have come under attack from a bull seal at Ballywalter earlier this week.
The pictures were taken by Strangford Lough ranger Jen Firth and staff from DoE marine division, who have now sent the remains of the infant for post-mortem analysis. The seal attack was witnessed by Ballywalter resident Lena McVea.
After noticing the seal tossing a large pink object into its mouth and drag off something darker in colour, she went to the beach to investigate and came across the stranded newborn basking shark.
"When I went down to the shark it was still alive, I am so sad that I could not rescue the poor thing," she said.
