We love the Toome bypass
A road project in Co Antrim is bypassing the competition in an online poll to find Northern Ireland’s best loved construction project.
The £18m Toome bypass is enjoying a lead with one third of the vote so far. The bypass, which opened in 2004, has been lauded for cutting journey times between Belfast and Londonderry by 15 minutes.
But the jewel in its crown is the elegant bow string Toome Bridge across the River Bann.
Belfast city centre shopping destination Victoria Square is not far behind the Toome bypass with 29% of the vote.
Voting patterns show the two projects have a tremendous hold on public affections — the next closest contender is Lough Erne Resort and Spa, with just 12% of the voters swayed by its charms.
The Belfast Telegraph and the Construction Employers Federation have joined forces to hold the survey to find out Northern Ireland's favourite construction project from the last 10 years.
Votes can be cast today and tomorrow by visiting www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk and clicking on the environment section. The winner will be announced on Thursday.
