Firm fined £65k over site death of worker

Published 31/10/2009

A construction firm has been fined £65,000 for breaching health and safety legislation following the death of one of its workmen at a Belfast apartment block.

John Graham (Dromore) Ltd pleaded guilty to two breaches of legislation at Belfast’s Crown Court on Thursday. The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland brought a case against the firm following the death of south Belfast man Gerard Morgan. The 53-year-old labourer died after a telehandler reversed over him at the old Ormeau Bakery site on February 27, 2008.

An investigation was launched by the authority which found the company did not ensure that the telehandler driver had an adequate field of vision at the rear of the machine.
