Five men held over dissident activity
Irish police in Co Donegal are questioning five men who were arrested in an ongoing operation to counter dissident republican activities.
Four of the men were arrested in Letterkenny yesterday morning while the fifth was picked up in Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula.
The men are being held at different Garda stations in the county.
They are aged between 40 and 60 years old and are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.
This is the second incident this month that Garda in Co Donegal have arrested alleged dissident republicans. Earlier in the month gardai stopped a car carrying four men who were acting suspiciously near Stranorlar in the east of the county. After being confronted three men ran away across fields in the Cooladawson townland while a fourth — a 49-year-old man — was detained.
Gardai recovered a firearm from the car that has been taken away for forensic examination.
In follow-up operations on both sides of the border gardai and PSNI officers in Strabane carried out vehicle checkpoints in a bid to find the men.
