Budget airline easyJet is launching four new European routes as part of a major expansion to its Belfast operation, it announced today.

The new routes are to Barcelona, Gdansk, Prague and Venice. The low-cost airline is also increasing frequencies on its Krakow and Paris air services from Belfast. The Krakow service will increase to five flights weekly, while the Paris service will be upped to eight flights a week.

The announcement comes soon after Ryanair launched plans to begin flying from George Best Belfast City Airport, indicating that it intends to develop a hub at the airport over the next five years.

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has held off on reports it intends to make Belfast International Airport its new UK hub.

The introduction of easyJet's new routes will increase the number of the airline's destinations from Belfast to 24.

More than 140,000 passengers are expected to travel on these routes in the first year.
