The Irish Government has unveiled massive investment plans that could transform transport, health and education in Northern Ireland as part of its National Spatial Plan.

Secretary of State Peter Hain welcomed the funding package, estimated to total £800m, which has now been pledged by Dublin to help develop infrastructure in Northern Ireland.

Under the new proposals for the 2007 to 2013 period, the Republic's Government is proposing the development of motorways and improved road infrastructure to act as gateways between various cities on both sides of the border.

Key cross-border routes identified include Dublin to Belfast and Dublin to Derry/Letterkenny, which is described as "critical" for the future of the North West region. The Dublin-Belfast Enterprise railway service will also be reviewed.
