The widow of the first PSNI officer to be murdered by terrorists has endorsed a unionist pact candidate.

Kate Carroll attended the launch of Tom Elliott's election campaign in Fermanagh-South Tyrone last night. Her husband Stephen was shot dead by dissident republicans in 2009.

"I want to support people who aspire to peace. Hope must always triumph over evil," she said.

Sinn Fein's Michelle Gildernew won the seat by just four votes in 2010, and UUP MLA Mr Elliott said it was now time to send a clear message "that local people are sick of being neglected at Westminster".

Also present was Arlene Foster of the DUP, which is backing Mr Elliott as part of the unionist pact.
