Skin rash risk to mobile phone users

Friday, 17 October 2008

People who use their mobile phones for long periods of time could develop an allergic skin rash, health experts have warned.

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) warned that people may develop rashes on their cheeks or ear due to the nickel contained in some mobile phones.

The issue came to light after several reports of patients with unexplained skin disorders.

Experts found that the reaction was caused by nickel in the casing or on the buttons of some mobile phones.

The BAD said doctors and the public should be aware of the risk, with cases estimated to be on the rise. Many cases could be going unreported.

People with a known reaction to nickel — a metal also used in jewellery — are thought to be most at risk.

Reports of several cases have been published in medical journals including the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and the British Journal of Dermatology.

Dr Graham Lowe, from the British Association of Dermatologists, dubbed the condition "mobile phone dermatitis".

He said: "The allergy results from frequent skin contact with nickel-containing objects. Prolonged or repetitive contact with a nickel-containing phone is more likely to cause a skin reaction in those who are allergic.”

this is pure lies...
they say that mobiles can cause all these illnesses and cancers..
they just say this to conterversy...
so sad!!!!

Aha! The editor has realised there was a blank spot in tonight's newspaper. Good ols Perkins has been instructed to Google "health risks" again, just as he did last week.

We were told then that we could develop red skin if we sat at a distance of one inch from an economy light bulb and the dramatic headline that ensued had some of us wondering if we should bin our bulbs.

What next? "Shock horror! Owning a pet can worsen your allergy if you frequently shove your nose deep into its coat!"?

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
