Members of the public are being urged not to give the kiss of life during CPR but to concentrate instead on chest compressions.

People should skip giving breath and instead pump the chest to the tune of the Bee Gees hit Stayin' Alive, according to the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

It says bystanders often do not perform CPR because they are worried about not doing it properly, including the ratio of breaths to chest compressions.

But research has shown that giving continuous chest compressions at 110 to 120 beats per minute is more effective than trying to do CPR with a poor rescue breath technique.

The charity hopes its new TV campaign, featuring actor Vinnie Jones, will give people the confidence to do CPR.

It says anyone without formal CPR training should skip the kiss of life in favour of "hard and fast" compressions in the centre of the chest.

Following the beat of Stayin' Alive has been recommended in the past to help people count chest compressions, as has the song Nellie The Elephant.

The new campaign has been backed by the UK Resuscitation Council.

Whitney funeral showed the true meaning of faith

Given the fact that the Christian faith played such a large role historically in the life of Britain and Ireland in the 20th century, it's not really a mystery that those who advocate what's known as a 'secular' worldview have become so aggressive in recent decades.

Do unionist politicians still cherish the link with London?

The Prime Minister David Cameron has set out his stall in support of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. His vision is all for one, one for all - for the Scots, the Welsh, the English and for us across the Irish Sea.
