HIV-positive woman worked at care home

Published 12/02/2010

An HIV-positive South African woman has admitted working illegally at a care home in Northern Ireland around the time she discovered her infection, the High Court has heard.

It was also claimed the failed asylum seeker has yet to file a sworn statement because a solicitor near where she is being detained in England is charging £500 to witness it.

A judge hearing the woman's legal fight against threatened deportation will rule next week on her application for permission to seek a judicial review.

But Mr Justice Treacy described her explanation for still not lodging the proper papers as “sounding strange”.

He added: “Even if there were a sworn affidavit... the fact she hasn't been candid with the court would be a reason for declining to hear her case.”
