Hundreds to join Derry protest over shooting of Gaza aid workers

A rally will be staged in Londonderry this weekend in protest at the killing of humanitarian aid workers on the Gaza flotilla.

Hundreds are expected to gather at Guildhall Square at 2pm on Saturday.

The event will be one of hundreds of rallies being staged simultaneously across the world.

Organiser the Derry Anti-War Coalition said there has been widespread revulsion across the north west over the actions of the Israeli military. Fiachra O’Luain (28) from Carndonagh in Co Donegal was one of the Irish people on the flotilla who was arrested and taken to an Israeli jail this week.

Davy McAuley from the Derry Anti-War Coalition (DAWC) said Fiachra had been a long-time supporter of the local organisation.

He said: “Derry has a wonderful history of standing up to oppression and standing with those who have been oppressed. The DAWC therefore call on the people of Derry to take to the streets to protest at the massacre of unarmed innocent humanitarian workers and with the people of Gaza, trapped in their prison camp by an illegal embargo.”

Meanwhile, Foyle MP Mark Durkan has written a hard-hitting letter to Foreign Secretary William Hague and Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin regarding the Israeli commando attack.
