In focus... best snaps of the year

A Belfast Telegraph photographer has been named among Northern Ireland's finest at a glittering awards ceremony.

David Fitzgerald took first place in the News category of the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association (NIPPA) awards sponsored by BT, while Pacemaker Press's Colm Lenaghan won the coveted BT Photographer of the Year award for a series of stunning images.

Colm scooped the prestigious accolade after securing top spot in three individual sections – politics, business/PR and picture story. His photos included the launch of the CS Lewis Festival and an Ulster Rugby team training picture.

Meanwhile, David wowed the judges with his fabulous shot of a loyalist protester blown off a Land Rover by water cannon.

The NIPPA competition attracted almost 400 entries from more than 30 photographers. There were 41 prizes s awarded at a gala event in Belfast's Hilton Hotel.
