Within hours of the game that cost Ireland a place in the World Cup finals - pictures mocking Thierry Henry's handball were flooding the internet and dropping into inboxes.

Meanwhile, social networking sites have gone into overdrive. "Thierry Henry" is one of the top 'trending topics' on micro-blogging site Twitter.

A Facebook group entitled " We Irish hate Thierry Henry (the cheat)" now has 80,000 registered followers making it one of the world's fastest-growing Facebook groups.

The Belfast Telegraph's website continues to be swamped by hundreds of emails and comments from furious Irish fans and apologetic French readers appalled by Henry's actions.
