Keane: My concern for troubled McGrath

Former Manchester United soccer star Roy Keane yesterday came to the aid of his troubled ex-Irish team mate Paul McGrath, who is at the centre of an alleged assault investigation.

Soccer legend McGrath — who retired from the game in 1998 and who has battled against alcoholism for years — was questioned in connection with an alleged assault of a man in an incident in Ferns, Co Wexford, last Monday.

“A 50-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the alleged incident and a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions,” said a Garda spokesperson.

Yesterday, Ipswich boss Roy Keane, said he had “a lot of time” for Paul.

McGrath won 83 caps for Ireland before finally hanging up his boots more than a decade ago.

Speaking at a charity promotion in Dublin yesterday, Keane said: “If it was down to everyone wishing him well he'd be fine. But it doesn't matter what I say. Paul's got to get the help himself — he knows where to get it.”
