'Killer' with a return ticket to China
Sensational claims in court
A Chinese man travelled to Northern Ireland to strangle his friend's pregnant lover before boarding a plane back to Hong Kong just hours later, a court has been told.
The murder trial began yesterday of Siu Ching Wong (45) who is accused of killing 18 weeks pregnant Mi Yi Ho (28) at her east Belfast home in June 1998.
Belfast Crown Court was told that Ho had been the lover of married Chinese restaurant owner 'Jimmy' Wing Chun Yuen. Prosecuting barrister Gordon Kerr told the jury "at best you may feel... the pregnancy of his lover was inconvenient".
Mr Kerr alleged that Yuen - who was cleared of murdering his lover in 2001 - phoned a number associated with Wong in Hong Kong the week before the murder.
He said that a number of people had seen a man fitting Wong's description near the woman's house on the night she was killed. The court heard she was strangled with a ligature. Mr Kerr said Wong bought a ticket back to Hong Kong the same day.
It was only when Yeun knew Wong, who denies the charge, was back in Hong Kong that he alerted the police to the dead body.
Mr Kerr declared: "... It is perfectly clear that the person who killed Miss Ho was the defendant Wong."
The trial continues.
