Gas price cut must not be just hot air
Friday, 16 February 2007
I note with interest the recent price reductions announced by British Gas, Powergen and Bord Gais.
These reductions appear to be with immediate effect, yet the local provider, Phoenix Natural Gas, is suggesting price reductions might occur here by April.
It was recently reported that wholesale gas prices have fallen by 60% since July last year, yet gas consumers in Northern Ireland are still suffering prices over one-third more expensive than their GB counterparts, even before these current reductions are taken into account.
Should someone not be asking the regulator why his office is not putting pressure on Phoenix to introduce cost reductions immediately rather than waiting until April, by which stage Northern Ireland consumers will have had to endure the highest prices during the period of highest consumption?
