Malachy McAnespie (Write Back, May 2) needs to educate himself about the
current scientific consensus on global warming.
The jury is in and the debate is over. It is happening and man is
responsible. The debate has moved on from 'what are we going to do about
it?' to 'how quickly can we implement a cap-and-trade system to bring carbon
emissions back to more natural levels?'.
Man has been influencing the environment ever since he started unleashing
millions of years' worth of stored carbon on an industrial scale only a few
centuries ago. We have a duty to leave a better legacy to subsequent
generations than a catastrophe that could have been prevented by earlier
action and was accelerated by a small but well-funded industry-sponsored
misinformation campaign.
