Leave our green spaces well alone

Thursday, May 08, 2008

I read with interest your report (Belfast Telegraph, May 2) about the plans to use the Comber Greenway as a possible route for a bus expressway.

I attended the meeting on May 1 and agree that there is a need for a dedicated bus route through east Belfast, but destroying a hugely popular and much appreciated linear park enjoyed by thousands is not the right way to go.

I notice that it was described in another report as 'a derelict railway'. I can only assume that the writer of this report didn't bother to visit the greenway and merely got the information from an out-of-date map, where it is still labelled thus.

Had he/she taken the trouble to come and see it, they would have found a well-used, vibrant and attractive local amenity and wildlife refuge in an area which is totally lacking in anything remotely similar. The proper place for a bus expressway is on the main arterial routes to/from the city, where people can access it, not diverting it down a back route merely for convenience.

Taking a lane from cars, which are the most inefficient users of already limited road space, is the only sensible way to go.

This will create freedom of choice. People will have the real choice of having a quick, efficient and stress free journey, arriving on time, or, if they so wish, continuing to sit in their gridlocked cars wasting time and money.

I think this is an ill thought out proposal.
