General did have his good points

Thursday, May 08, 2008

Your correspondent Eddie McIlwaine writes of a new documentary about the Eurovision Song Contest (Belfast Telegraph, May 6).

The programme will state that Cliff Richard was cheated out of winning the Eurovision Song Contest with the insipid Phil Coulter imposition — rather, composition — Congratulations.

Eddie reports that the documentary claims that General Franco of Spain had the vote interfered with.

The upshot of it all was that Congratulations was beaten to the title by La, La, La.

It's alway reassuring to know that bloodthirsty, evil, brutal and crazed dictators sometimes had their good points too.
