Give fly-posters a pasting

Friday, May 09, 2008

I live and work in Finaghy in south Belfast and I am fed up that people can come along in broad daylight and quite blatantly fly-post on telecommunications cabinets.

They make the village look rundown and neglected. I have complained on numerous occasions, but no one can do anything.

Belfast City Council told me that it is up to the phone company involved to maintain their cabinets, but they have no powers to make them do it or force them to comply. I have never even seen the phone company cleaning them because the graffiti on the other side of them has been there for years.

I then tried a different approach and asked whether the clubs and venues being advertised in this way could be told not to fly-post. Again, no joy as I was told they would claim they had no control over where their agents stuck their posters.

This is rather ingenious as they know that there are no legitimate poster sites except on their own premises or by paying for a proper large poster site. Why should they when no one fines them?

Belfast City Council would be quick enough to fine an individual for dropping litter or not picking up after their dog, yet these clubs are seemingly able to do as they please.

It seems as long as these eyesores remain in the suburbs and not around the Victoria Centre or City Hall, Belfast City Council will continue to turn a blind eye.
