Bargain creativity needed

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Before we sell off public assets we need to be a little more creative. For example, I am sure the public would welcome a couple of franchised garages offering MoT tests in competition with the state run monopoly.

Moira commuters would benefit if the Environment and Heritage Service surrendered their trackside depot to NIR, in return for land elsewhere, to allow the building of a car park.

Belfast would be better served if the library in Royal Avenue was used instead as public function rooms.

The Mournes would benefit from being a national park, but why not give every householder the opportunity to buy a square foot of Slieve Donard?

The urban M1 could be a toll road between 8-10am for single occupancy cars and outdoor peripatetic markets could be licensed in several towns.

But I'm not so sure we have the political creativity. One private MoT garage would prove me wrong.
