A tribute poem for Robert Dunlop

Saturday, May 17, 2008

I was so saddened to hear of Robert Dunlop's sudden and sad death. At such moments I write poetry. This is a poem I wrote for Robert Dunlop.

Legend followed legend,
And this he did, in Joey's wake.
Living forever in his memory,
Providing he had, what it takes.

Riding wasn't just, a pastime,
To him, it was a passion and a goal.
To him, it was his life,
One that eclipes, your very soul.

He knew the risk, was very real,
Yet, his bike would take the strain.
He himself, would do his bit,
Sometimes, regardless of the pain.

He had watched, his friends be taken,
Then his beloved Joey, would join the throng.
For once, he would stop and question,
'What I'am doing... is it So very wrong?'

Yet the call to ride, would be too great,
Much too strong, just to fight.
The roar of the crowds, the action,
Clouding what to him, was right.

Yet, legends don't just disappear,
In our memories, they will remain.
You have lead the race, as a racer,
We have lost much, yet we hold close the gain.

Your life was taken, much too soon,
Yet it always happens, to the best.
Who have touched our lives, with courage,
Even when facing, life's biggest test.

But racing was always, in your blood,
The Dunlop name, lead the way.
You lived to race, and loved to win,
All this, each and every race day.

The Dunlop name, continues,
And your son's wear it, with pride.
You have instilled in them, that passion,
That's only satisfied, when you ride.

You reached out, and touched so many,
To them, you were more than, just a name.
You rode because, you loved it,
And never for just the, mantle of fame.

The role of honour, is now rewritten,
Sad to see, Dunlop names, now are two.
Joey's loss was, so tragic,
Fate now deemed, the next loss be you.

We will walk the road, the road you once raced,
But watching, just won't be the same.
As we have lost, one of the best,
Someone No1, in his game.

But, thank you for making, racing special,
For which you gave, your all.
Yet, memories of your acheivements,
Will make us, forever walk so tall.

Ireland has lost, another Son,
And our lives, will never be the same.
You will live forever, in our thoughts,
Robert Dunlop... was his name!
