TV licence fee is unfair

Friday, 6 June 2008

Deborah King (Write Back, May 30) tried to defend the indefensible — the BBC licence fee. I wish to clarify some of her statistics.

She claims nine out of 10 people support this enforcement campaign.

These figures are nonsensical.

Two years ago a survey showed that 69% of viewers don't watch BBC programmes. That figure is probably higher now.

These viewers only pay the fee because of the enforcement methods, not because they want to.

An example of these enforcement methods was experienced by an elderly neighbour of mine when she was confronted at her back window by an enforcer who wasn't aware that she didn't own a TV set.

It's the kind of thing you expect in a police state.

At the same time, the BBC is under fire for pumping out explicit material on the internet.

The new BBC iPlayer allows access to shows such as 'Page Three Teens', 'Sex ... with mum and dad' and 'Funny Business', which features jokes about genitalia.

The BBC defend themselves, claiming that they're a genuine public service broadcaster, but it's impossible to justify using totalitarian tactics to force people to pay for junk like this.
