Ahern may face motion of no confidence in Dail

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, could be facing a motion of no confidence when the Dail resumes after its summer break tomorrow.

Fine Gael and the Labour Party both say they are reviewing Mr Ahern's explanation to the Mahon Tribunal about the large sums of money lodged in his bank accounts in the 1990s.

They say they will then decide how best the Taoiseach can be held accountable in the Dail and all options will be considered, including a motion of no confidence.

Mr Ahern said yesterday that he was happy with his evidence to the tribunal, even though his explanation of the lodgements is at odds with bank records.
