Hi °C | Lo °C A police operation to prevent clashes between a far-right group and anti-fascist protesters has been named after a tree in Northern Ireland said to represent peace and unity.
The rival groups — the English Defence League and Unite Against Fascism — will stage marches through Newcastle city centre on Saturday and will end up 100 yards apart, watched over by hundreds of police officers.
Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ashman said people were allowed the right to peaceful protest and Operation Dunadry was set up to protect public safety. Police named the operation “Dunadry” after a tree which stands in the grounds of the Dunadry Hotel, Belfast.
