McCabe killer due for early release in run-up to South's election
Tuesday, 6 March 2007
One of the killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe is reportedly set to be released from prison around the same time as the upcoming general election in the Republic.
Reports say Michael O'Neill will be freed from Castlerea Prison on May 17th after serving eight years of his 11-year sentence for manslaughter.
He is being freed early due to his legal entitlement to remission for good behaviour, but the move is likely to cause embarrassment for the Government in the run-up to the election.
O'Neill was one of four IRA men jailed for manslaughter in February 1999 over the killing of Garda McCabe during a botched post office robbery in Adare, Co Limerick, three years previously.
Although Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has yet to set a date for the Irish General Election, political analysts have predicted Friday, May 18, as the most likely day.
